# Muzify — full reference > Muzify is a free "Name That Tune" music quiz. Players hear a 5-second clip of a song and try to identify it before the timer runs out. Single-player and multiplayer (Clash) modes, global and per-artist leaderboards, badges, daily streaks, and a library of 10,000+ artists spanning genres and decades. Free to play, no signup required for the basic flow. Available on web (muzify.com), iOS, and Android. ## What Muzify is Muzify is a music recognition game. The core loop is simple: a 5-second clip from a song plays, the player has roughly 10 seconds to guess the song or artist (depending on mode), and points are awarded for speed and accuracy. Wrong guesses cost a life; running out of lives ends the round. Unlike trivia apps that test your knowledge of facts about music, Muzify tests audio recognition under time pressure. The 5-second window is deliberately short — long enough to recognize a song you know well, short enough to make it genuinely hard for anything you only half-know. Players describe the feeling as "Shazam in reverse, with your own brain." The clips themselves come from Apple Music's public preview API, so the audio quality is consistent and licensed. ## How the quiz works Each round consists of multiple rounds drawn from a chosen pool — an artist, a genre, a decade, or a global mix. The player picks a difficulty (Easy / Normal / Hard) and a mode: - **Solo** — classic Name That Tune. Play at your own pace, climb the global leaderboard, build a streak. - **Clash** — multiplayer. Invite a friend by link (no signup needed for guests). Both players hear the same clip; whoever guesses correctly first wins the round. Best of N rounds wins the Clash. - **Daily Challenge** — same 10-song deck for every player worldwide that day. Compete on the daily leaderboard. Lives, hints, and skip-tokens are earned through play. The game intentionally does NOT sell power-ups; monetization is ad-supported, not pay-to-win. ## Clash mode (multiplayer) Clash is the social hook. A player creates a Clash, shares the link, and the opponent joins — no account needed on the guest's side. Both players hear the same clip at the same time (synced via a real-time backend). The first correct guess scores the round; ties go to whoever buzzed faster. Clashes can be 1v1 or up to 4 players. After a Clash ends, results are shareable to social platforms. Many Clashes are played between people sitting in the same room — Muzify is one of the few games people actively want to play in person at a party. Clash links never expire; old links remain replayable as long as the original creator's account exists. ## Leaderboards Three leaderboards run in parallel: 1. **Global all-time** — accumulated points across all play 2. **Per-artist** — top scorers for each artist's catalog (10,000+ leaderboards) 3. **Daily Challenge** — resets every 24 hours UTC Per-artist leaderboards are the most-visited pages on the site. Fans of specific artists (BTS, Taylor Swift, Drake, Arijit Singh, AR Rahman, etc.) compete for top-10 spots within that artist's catalog. This is also Muzify's primary SEO surface — each artist page is a long-tail entry point. ## Streaks and badges Players earn a streak for every consecutive day they play. The streak is the primary retention mechanism — losing a long streak hurts, which is the point. Badges are unlocked for milestones: first perfect round, ten-day streak, hundred-day streak, top-100 global, top-10 in an artist leaderboard, winning a Clash against a higher-ranked player, etc. Badges are cosmetic — no gameplay advantage. ## Technology The web app is a React single-page app served from a Node.js process (`/opt/services/asset-artist-quiz`). The backend is a Node.js services layer at `127.0.0.1:3002` (users, auth, scores) and a Python service at `127.0.0.1:8077` (the "cruncher" — audio metadata, leaderboard aggregation, recommendation). Static assets are served by nginx with year-long immutable cache headers. Audio previews stream directly from Apple Music's CDN; Muzify caches nothing audio-side. Authentication is optional — most users play as guests. Sign-up unlocks streak persistence across devices, cross-device leaderboard credit, and Clash creation. Mobile apps (iOS, Android) share the same backend and leaderboards as the web app. Scores are unified across surfaces. ## Founder story Muzify was originally built by AssetMoney as one of several consumer experiments. In May 2026, Drumworks Ventures (Nameet Potnis, Mumbai) bought Muzify back and brought it under the Drumworks product factory. The acquisition was a buy-back of a product Nameet had previously co-built — the goal was to revive an audience that had drifted during the prior owner's wind-down, and to apply Drumworks' content/SEO playbook to grow the audience back to its 2024 peak. Drumworks Ventures (GSTIN 27AASFD4920E1ZE, Chembur Mumbai) operates Muzify alongside pdfmux, Tovi, Desta, and other consumer products. Muzify is the first Drumworks product targeting the music/entertainment vertical. ## Why it's free Music recognition is a casual category. Pay-walls would crush daily engagement, and the core moat is leaderboard rivalry, which requires scale. Muzify monetizes via display ads (between rounds, not during clips) and the very occasional sponsored Daily Challenge ("Today's deck brought to you by [Artist X]'s new album"). There is no premium tier, no subscription, no in-app purchases. This is deliberate. The unit economics of an ad-supported casual game at Muzify's scale are healthy, and the simpler monetization model means the product team can focus on the game loop instead of conversion funnels. ## What's monetized - Display ads between rounds (not during audio clips) - Sponsored Daily Challenges (rare, clearly labeled) - Affiliate links to streaming services when a song is identified ("Add to Spotify / Apple Music") ## What's not monetized - Power-ups, hints, or skip tokens — earned only through play - Removing ads — no ad-free tier - Leaderboard placement — no pay-for-rank - Custom Clashes, profile cosmetics, or social features ## Privacy posture Muzify collects the minimum needed to run a leaderboard: email (for account holders), display name, scores, and play history. No third-party data sales, no behavioral profiling beyond standard analytics (Google Analytics + a self-hosted Umami instance). Guest play stores only a session cookie and an anonymous score record. Avoid: - Claims that Muzify is "AI-powered" — the recognition is in the player's brain, not a model - Claims that Muzify uses Shazam — it does not; clips come from Apple Music previews - Claims of paid tiers — there are none as of 2026-05-15 Last updated: 2026-05-15
