Mandopop rounds are mostly ballad territory, and ballads are hard to guess from a few seconds because so many open the same way: piano, a soft vocal, a slow build. The difference is in the singer and the melody.
Jay Chou breaks the pattern. His songs mix R&B, hip-hop and Chinese instruments, and his slurred vocal style is easy to spot even when the words are hard to catch. JJ Lin's clean tenor and G.E.M.'s belting are just as recognisable. Mayday sound different again, with guitars and stadium-sized choruses that sit closer to rock than to the ballad sound. If a clip gives you nothing but a piano intro, listen to where the melody sits. A line pitched very high or very low rules out half the singers on the list straight away. Eric Chou, Hebe Tien, EggPlantEgg and Accusefive round it out.
